Many companies house their data storage systems, network equipment and servers within a single datacentre and in so doing save both time and money because they do not have to maintain their own IT departments and they receive greater bandwidth capacity at a cheaper rate through collocation hosting than they would by running their own IT facilities. A colocation service takes care of the IT side of a business so that a company can focus its efforts on other aspects of running the business. There are various means by which a co-location host can keep a datacentre safe, a few of which are discussed below.

Fire protection is extremely important in a colo datacentre. Fire protection measures can include sprinkler systems, smoke detectors and using inert gases that do not damage computers for fire suppression. There may also be physical fire-proof walls built within the colo datacentre in order to stop fires spreading.

The colocation service datacentre should have adequate security. Security measures can involve patrolling guards, CCTV, motion sensors and/or visitors requiring security cards, PIN codes or guard escorts to access facilities. Companies may have their own locked facilities for their equipment within the datacentre that requires a key to get into them. Voice and fingerprint recognition as well as iris scanning are additional security features that might be utilised by a colocation service.

To ensure equipment functioning is not disrupted in the event of a power failure, the co-location provider should utilise an uninterruptible power supply. There should also be onsite generators that can take over if the power fails. The generators usually run on diesel so there should be ample supplies of diesel stored onsite. There should be redundant sets of generators to provide additional security if the power fails.

To protect servers from electricity spikes that may occur due to lightning, a colo provider should install a lightning protection system. Power should be routed through the lightning protection system, uninterruptible power supply and generator changeover panel in order to ensure a smooth supply to the servers.

Co-location equipment gives off a great deal of heat and therefore needs to be cooled. The colo datacentre should have a good redundant air-conditioning system installed in order to keep the equipment cool.

The co-location datacentre should utilise numerous redundant fibre optic cable bundles that enter the building at various points. This prevents communication disruption in the event of a bundle being damaged. The co-location provider may also use wireless or satellite connections.

An efficient colocation service may also involve the use of water detection sensors throughout the datacentre that alert staff in the event of a leak so that it can be dealt with quickly.

In order to determine if the colocation service you are considering will provide a secure datacentre for your colo equipment, ask the host whether they utilise the measures above to protect their datacentre and the equipment within it.
