Windows Mobiles

Ξ January 13th, 2009 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Personal |

Few facts about windows mobiles.  Unfortunately in Cyprus there cannot be full compatibility for windows mobile devices.  Allthough the infrastructure is there the services are -to say the least- cumbersome thus making it difficult to use your device fully.  The problem is that there is still a monopoly by the goverment telephony service which in consiquence results to fat wages for idiots.  For example GPS, there are no  updated maps -allthough the goverment is paying millions for various satelite systems- therefore GPS is only applicable in cities and even then you cannot depend on it 100% as some updates such as one-way streets are not updated.  Another example is MMS, allthough it is supported for windows mobile devices you need to call at least 5 times in hope that you will get a guy with iq over 110 and have the will to give you the proper settings.

Nevertheless here are some files that might make your life easier:

TRAVIAN, Beginners guide, Gauls

Start Small, Think Big.

In the beginning it’s best if you do not follow the guide.  Follow only up to the point where it asks you to build barracks, instead continue upgrading your resources.  This way by the end of the protection period you will have some resources to generate some troops.  If you follow the guide you will end up with barracks and 2 soldiers and the first attack you get they will die and therefore loose your resources used to create them.  Instead if you have no soldiers and get attacked then nobody dies.  Instead build cranny, this hides your resources so raiders cannot find.  Make cranny big enough to hold everything, if raiders manage to raid even just a few resources they will put you on schedule and raid you daily.

After you have some resources try to join an alliance, this will help you find “easy targets”, meaning that you will be able to see which villages have been raided and being farmed.  Pick the ones where there is no resistance and raid with some phalanx, start with 5 and slowly create more, up to 50.  Use phalanx to raid and use loot to upgrade your resources.

At this point you may now start looking for targets yourself, build stable and pathfinder and scout surrounding villages to identify future targets, again remember not to pick a fight when is not necessary, at this point you really do not need to bring attention to yourself.

The art of raiding is in fact my favorite in the game.  In my quests I have used it a lot mostly because I’m impatient and cannot wait for weeks until resources build up to perform the upgrades, with a raid you can have the desired resources in a few minutes.

The next step is also related to raid, you now need to raid more, faster and bring back more from every raid so you don’t have to go back.  The best unit to do this is Theutates Thunders; they carry 75 resources each from every raid and have an attack of 90 which is really great.  It is also the fastest cavalry unit of the Gaul tribe.  Remember that being a Gaul you have great cavalry units.

Build around 100 Theutates Thunders and raid EVERYTHING.  At this point you may start causing some trouble, attack members of small alliances and look for targets with population +100.

The goal is to reach population of +500 and have 2 villages so you can try and get in one of the top alliances, this is just every other strategy game, no-one can win this game alone.

Travian Coconut Bot

Automated upgrading/building for the Travian Game.  I have recently discovered that you can start a bot which will automatically upgrade/build while not even connected.  It logs on your account every few minutes, check whether the resources are availiable for the upgrade/build and performs the task.  It then deletes the task and moves to the next one.  This has come to be very handy since it is not possible to log on 24 hours a day to check what can be upgraded and therefore missing out on development and loosing resources.  It has helped me grow pretty quick allthough you must still keep an eye on it as it tends to stop some times for no good reason.  Only drawback is that you need a computer online all the time for the bot to have access to the site.  The link for this great utility is http://www.travianbot.eu/ .

In future versions there are other cool functions being prepared such as building army, sending out troops when attack is near so that you do not loose troops and much more.

Travian, The Beginning

Ξ September 18th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Personal |

Hello all, this is the first of many posts for a great online game called Travian (travian.com).  A group of users including myself have initiated a new Alliance.  Purpose of this alliance is to stay alive long enough to grow and be able to compete in higher level.  Only active members can participate in this Alliance which means that only the ones with population over 100 may join in the future.

The members of this Alliance are the following:

  • stevo1969 (pop. 176)
  • versingetorix (pop. 113)
  • Xandria 4 (pop. 101)
  • Frankee (pop. 89)
  • dinamocy (pop. 51) Yours Trully.

stevo1969 is the senior (and largest population) and therefore gets first shot on creating alliance and Leader slot.  He will have the responsibility to invite all of us to join.

Rules of the Alliance are pretty simple:

  1. This is a democratic Alliance, all major decisions must have the majority of votes to proceed.  In case of equal votes the Leader vote counts for 0.01 more than anyone elses.
  2. We do not attack each other, this will result in immediate kick and violator will be attacked by the Alliance untill wiped out.
  3. If an ally needs help we all pitch in. Common courtesy. In case anyone does not help without good reason there will be consequences.

Some Name Ideas for the Alliance are :

DarkCloud (By Xandria 4)

We Killed Kenny
Victorious Secret
We Play Naked
Six Feet Under
Is Better Than You
Travian Staff
Fear and Loathing
Blood Bath and Beyond
Pick up Group
Prostidudes (By Dinamocy)

We will give this a day for everyone to pitch in name ideas (Reply to this post) and then I will provide a poll on my site for you guys to vote.

In the meantime stevo1969 may create the Alliance and name it whatever just so that he can send invites.  We will then rename to the name which got the most votes.

The shortest, fastest / faster , and easiest way to compare two tables in SQL Server: UNION ALL

Ξ January 24th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Technical |

Have been dealing with huge amount of data for an SAP R/3 project I’ve been assigned and have done some research to freshen up my knowledge on the subject.  In my old pile of How-To’s the following popped up, don’t know where I found it though but it certainly does the trick.  Offcourse it’s also best to do all the standard DBA for this type of work such as Creating Indexes for columns used commonly, Update Statitsics, … .

When you have two tables (or resultsets from SELECT statements) that you wish to compare, and you want to see any changes in ANY columns, as well as to see which rows exist in 1 table but not the other (in either direction) I have found that the UNION operator works quite well.

UNION allows you to compare all columns very quickly, and also handles comparing NULL values to other NULLs successfully, which a join clause or a WHERE condition doesn’t normally do.  It also allows you to very quickly see which rows are missing in either table, which only a FULL OUTER JOIN will do, but of course we all know to avoid those at all costs (right?) — a full outer join is about as “unrelational” as you can get.  (every column returned is potentially Null and must be wrapped in a COALESCE function).  Best of all, the UNION is quick and easy and short.

The basic idea is: if we GROUP the union of two tables on all columns, then if the two tables are identical all groups will result in a COUNT(*) of 2.  But for any rows that are not completely matched on any column in the GROUP BY clause, the COUNT(*) will be 1 — and those are the ones we want.  We also need to add a column to each part of the UNION to indicate which table each row comes from, otherwise there is no way to distinguish between which row comes from which table.

So, here’s an example, assuming we are comparing tables A and B, and the primary key of both tables is ID:

SELECT MIN(TableName) as TableName, ID, COL1, COL2, COL3 …

FROM

(

  SELECT ‘Table A’ as TableName, A.ID, A.COL1, A.COL2, A.COL3, …

  FROM A

  UNION ALL

  SELECT ‘Table B’ as TableName, B.ID, B.COL1, B.COl2, B.COL3, …

  FROM B

) tmp

GROUP BY ID, COL1, COL2, COL3 …

HAVING COUNT(*) = 1

ORDER BY ID

The above returns all rows in either table that do not completely match all columns in the other.  In addition, it returns all rows in either table that do not exist in the other table.  It handles nulls as well, since GROUP BY normally consolidates NULL  values together in the same group.  If both tables match completely, no rows are returned at all.

The MIN() aggregate function used on the TableName column is just arbitrary — it has no effect since we are only returning groups of rows in which there has been no consolidation with the GROUP BY (note the HAVING clause).

CREATE PROCEDURE CompareTables(@table1 varchar(100),

 @table2 Varchar(100), @T1ColumnList varchar(1000),

 @T2ColumnList varchar(1000) = )

AS

– Table1, Table2 are the tables or views to compare.

– T1ColumnList is the list of columns to compare, from table1.

– Just list them comma-separated, like in a GROUP BY clause.

– If T2ColumnList is not specified, it is assumed to be the same

– as T1ColumnList.  Otherwise, list the columns of Table2 in

– the same order as the columns in table1 that you wish to compare.

– The result is all rows from either table that do NOT match

– the other table in all columns specified, along with which table that

– row is from.

declare @SQL varchar(8000);

IF @t2ColumnList = SET @T2ColumnList = @T1ColumnList

set @SQL = ‘SELECT ”’ + @table1 + ”’ AS TableName, ‘ + @t1ColumnList +

 ‘ FROM ‘ + @Table1 + ‘ UNION ALL SELECT ”’ + @table2 + ”’ As TableName, ‘ +

 @t2ColumnList + ‘ FROM ‘ + @Table2

set @SQL = ‘SELECT Max(TableName) as TableName, ‘ + @t1ColumnList +

 ‘ FROM (’ + @SQL + ‘) A GROUP BY ‘ + @t1ColumnList +

 ‘ HAVING COUNT(*) = 1′

exec ( @SQL)

Nintendo Wii Experience

Ξ December 24th, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Personal |

After a weekend of playing I am now hooked !!!

Graphics not overloaded, keeping it simple.  Other sites mention that the console can produce much more.  At the end of the day everyone must realise that this console is not intended to produce the heavy graphics and “dragged” scenarios of gameplay.  This is interactive gaming being borned.  After playing for a few hours this weekend I feel like I’ve been to the gym.  Everything is sore.  This could have never happened with any other console.  Also, anyone can play and straight away, no reading manuals for the all the different functions of  other games by different consoles.  Last and best is the fact that people are actually losing weight with this, it even has a fitness schedule.  Imaging boxing around for an hour, you will definately loose 500 calories if not more and it’s all fun.

SwitchNetConfig

Ξ December 18th, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Technical |

This is a tiny utility which stores multiple network and proxy configuration as profiles. You can apply a profile to set specific network setting and proxy from simple shortcuts.

Great for people that need to change their netwrok settings on the Fly. Being a consultant I’ve always owned a laptop and have found that messing around with my laptop’s network settings is time consuming. This utility stores the Network Configuration Setings and Procy. You can load whichever setting you want at any time on the fly. For example I have a settings stored for Home, Work and one for every customer I’m visiting. This program automatically sets IP, Subnet, Gateway and DNS for my LAN card and also changes the IE Proxy setting.
